   Résumé
   Parmi une escadrille de forteresses volantes, le bombardier B 17 «Mary Ann» quitte sa base pour une mission de routine. Apprenant le bombardement de Pearl Harbor, l'équipage se détourne vers différentes îles du Pacifique où l'attendent de multiples combats.
   Commentaire
   Air Force constitue la quintessence du genre, tant par sa description réaliste de la vie dans un bombardier en guerre que par la rigueur de sa construction, alternant les combats avec les moments de repos à terre. Sans sentimentalité dans les relations d'amitié et de fraternité ni emphase dans le récit d'actes de bravoure, Hawks décrit un héroïsme quotidien où l'individu est sans cesse montré en tant qu'élément d'un groupe en action, comme l'avion n'est jamais qu'une partie d'un vaste dispositif dont il tire son efficacité.
